Arabesque Tricarico overlooks the valley of the Basento River. Home of the mayor-poet Rocco Scotellaro, the townà è known for “L’m’sh-k-r ”, figurants disguised as “cows” and “bulls” starring in the carnival.
The medieval historic center è among the most important and best preserved in Basilicata, consisting of the Arab quarters of the “Ràbata” and “Saracena”, the Norman ones of the “Monte” and “Piano”, and the “Civita”, where streets and alleys take on different aspects depending on the domination from which they were put up.
Standing out among the many churches is one of the main Marian sites in the region: the Shrine of Our Lady of Fonti, reached on foot each year by many faithful. Not unnoticed is the tall Norman Tower attached to the castle most likely built between the 9th and 10th centuries as a fortified fortress and then modified in the Norman-Swabian era between the 11th and 13th. The landscape è surrounded by extensive forests populated by majestic oaks and imposing turkey oaks.
