About Municipal Palace of Montepulciano

Municipal Palace of Montepulciano - Montepulciano | Secret World Trip Planner

The Palazzo Comunale of Montepulciano overlooks Piazza Grande. The building was built in the thirteenth century in Gothic style and renovated by Michelozzo during the fifteenth century. The similarity between the Palazzo Comunale of Montepulciano and the Palazzo della Signoria in Florence is impressive, it was personally commissioned by Cosimo I dei Medici. The ground floor is covered in ashlar, while the rest of the facade is in travertine. The battlements on the terrace are Guelph merlons. To see are the interiors with the well and the nineteenth-century tombstones. The Palazzo Comunale of Montepulciano is the seat of the town hall. From its tower you can observe a splendid panorama: on a clear day you can see, from the side of the Val di Chiana the pre-Apennine peaks, Perugia, the Subasio, Lake Trasimeno with its islands, and the lakes of Montepulciano and Chiusi. On the other side Monte Amiata, Val d'Orcia, Pienza, Monticchiello, Montalcino and in the distance, the towers of Siena.

The building was personally commissioned by Cosimo I dei Medici, and its design bears striking similarity to the Palazzo della Signoria in Florence.
From the palace tower, you can enjoy a splendid panorama that includes Lake Trasimeno with its islands, the lakes of Montepulciano and Chiusi, Perugia, and the Subasio mountains on clear days. On the opposite side, you can see Monte Amiata, Val d'Orcia, Pienza, Monticchiello, Montalcino, and in the distance, the towers of Siena.
The palace features a striking combination of ashlar covering on the ground floor and travertine on the remaining facade. The battlements on the terrace are designed with Guelph merlons, which are characteristic of medieval Tuscan architecture and reflect the building's Gothic origins.
Inside the palace, visitors can explore the interiors which feature a notable well and nineteenth-century tombstones. The building currently serves as the seat of the town hall, making it an active civic center worth visiting.
While the Palazzo Comunale serves as the town hall and is accessible to visitors, the tower offers exceptional panoramic views and is worth inquiring about for access. A clear day is ideal for visiting the tower, as you can see across the Val di Chiana, Val d'Orcia, and toward Siena in the distance.
