A moose moves slowly among the pines, indifferent to the children who watch it from a few meters away. We are not in a remote nature reserve in northern Sweden, but in Slottsskogen, the large urban park in Gothenburg, reachable by tram from the city center in less than fifteen minutes. This is the first thing that strikes those who arrive here unexpectedly: the wildlife is not behind bars, but lives in large natural enclosures that blend with the surrounding forest, making every encounter authentic and memorable.
Slottsskogen — whose name literally means castle forest — covers about 137 hectares in the western district of Gothenburg. Opened as a public park in 1874, it was designed with the explicit intention of providing citizens with a green lung accessible to all, without an entrance fee. Almost one hundred and fifty years later, that promise is still kept: entry is completely free, every day of the year.
The Nordic fauna at a glance
The beating heart of the park is its collection of animals typical of Scandinavian wildlife, housed in environments that mimic their natural habitat. The moose — impressive animals, capable of exceeding two meters at the withers — graze in grassy enclosures bordered by low, almost invisible fences. Not far away, the gray seals swim in outdoor pools, visible from an elevated walkway that allows for observation both on the surface and underwater through transparent walls. It is a spectacle that children remember for a long time, but it also captivates adults.
Among the Nordic birds present in the park are specimens of the great horned owl and various species of wild ducks that roam freely in the internal ponds. These small bodies of water, hidden among the vegetation, represent one of the most surprising aspects of Slottsskogen: one can find themselves walking along a quiet shore, with the reflection of the trees on the still water, completely forgetting that they are in a city of over half a million inhabitants.
The meadows and nature that change with the seasons
In spring and summer, the clearings of Slottsskogen transform into expanses of wildflowers. The open meadows — used by Gothenburg residents for picnics, reading, and improvised sports — are painted yellow and purple, while the paths in the woods remain cool even on the hottest days. The contrast between the sunny open areas and the dense shade of the underbrush is one of the most characteristic landscape elements of the park, which offers completely different environments within just a few steps.
In autumn, the birches and beeches provide a palette of colors that transforms every walk into something visually rich. In winter, when the snow covers the paths and the silence deepens, the park takes on an almost fairytale-like character. The Swedes do not give up visiting it even with temperatures below zero: it is common to encounter families with strollers, elderly people with Nordic walking poles, and morning joggers in every season.
What to see besides the animals
Inside the park is the Naturhistoriska museet, the Natural History Museum of Gothenburg, one of the oldest in Sweden, which hosts among its highlights a stuffed blue whale — one of the few exhibitions of this kind in Europe. The museum deserves a separate visit, but even just passing by, with its 19th-century architecture emerging among the trees, adds a historical note to the walk.
Scattered throughout the park are also several seasonal kiosks and cafes, where you can stop for a fika — the Swedish coffee break, a social ritual more than just a habit — with a view of the greenery. The kiosk near the main pond is a particularly popular stop for locals on weekends.
How to get there and when to visit
Slottsskogen is easily reachable by tram number 1 or 2 from the central station of Gothenburg, getting off at the Linnéplatsen or Slottsskogen stop. The walk from the historic center takes about twenty minutes and passes through the lively Linné district, rich in cafes and independent shops — a great excuse to turn the visit to the park into a whole day.
The best time to visit Slottsskogen is early in the morning on weekdays, when the light filters through the trees and the park is almost exclusively frequented by dog walkers or joggers. On weekends, the park becomes much livelier, especially on sunny summer days, when the lawns fill up with Gothenburg residents. Bringing a picnic blanket and something to eat is the most sensible choice: the internal kiosks have variable hours and may be closed in the low season.
