About TAURASI D.O.C.G.

TAURASI D.O.C.G. - Taurasi | Secret World Trip Planner

The name comes from the town of the same name, ancient Taurasia dalle vigne opime (Titus Livy). It is produced in an area of great winemaking tradition, which includes 17 municipalities, all in Irpinia. The balance between the climate, the vine and the soil appears perfect, a balance that has been harmonizing and strengthening over the centuries, until it has blended into a wine with superior characteristics, which is characterized by aromatic complexity, a velvety, full and elegant taste, and intense and delicate aromas. Today, Taurasi, vinified with the most modern technologies, but respecting tradition, is one of the very few Italian wines worthy of very long aging. The vines are, for the most part, trained by guyot or spurred cordon in specialized, thick-grafted vineyards, with yields that rarely exceed eighty quintals per hectare. It is the first wine from the south to be awarded the Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita, the highest recognition that can be given to a wine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Taurasi takes its name from the ancient town of Taurasia, mentioned by the Roman historian Titus Livy as having "opime vigne" (excellent vineyards). It holds the distinction of being the first wine from southern Italy to receive the prestigious DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) designation, Italy's highest wine classification.
Taurasi DOCG is produced across 17 municipalities all located in the Irpinia region, an area with centuries of winemaking tradition. This extended production zone benefits from a perfect balance of climate, vine varieties, and soil conditions that have been refined over generations.
Taurasi requires a minimum of 3 years aging, with at least one year spent in barrel, before it can be released to the market. If aged for at least 4 years with 18 months in barrel and a minimum alcohol content of 12.50%, it can bear the "Riserva" designation on the label.
Taurasi is made primarily from the Aglianico grape, which must comprise a minimum of 85% of the blend, with up to 15% from other approved varieties. This noble southern Italian grape gives Taurasi its characteristic aromatic complexity, velvety texture, and capacity for very long aging.
Authentic Taurasi displays an intense ruby color that gradually tends toward garnet with age, eventually developing orange reflections, accompanied by characteristic ethereal and pleasant aromas. On the palate, it is dry, full, and harmonious with a balanced and persistent aftertaste, and must be bottled in dark Bordeaux-shaped glass bottles with cork closures.
