Frequently Asked Questions

The Tonna race takes place twice a year: on the first Sunday in June and the second Sunday in September. These dates coincide with religious holidays—the first dedicated to Our Lady Liberator and the second to the Holy Crucifix—making them the perfect times to visit this remote village for its festive celebrations.
The Tonna is an ancient square race similar to the famous Palio di Siena, but riders compete on donkeys rather than horses. Jockeys race three laps around the San Donato square (a round square called 'tonna'), and after preliminary selection races, winners compete in the final race to claim the Palio banner.
Donkeys were historically the only viable means of transportation to reach Civita di Bagnoregio, as the village sits atop a cliff accessible only by steep, winding paths. By racing donkeys, the Tonna honors this important part of the village's past and cultural heritage.
The Palio banner is painted each year by a local artist and depicts the event's patron saint, making each year's version unique and artistically significant. This tradition connects the race to local artistic talent and the religious significance of the festival.
Plan your visit for either the first Sunday in June or the second Sunday in September to experience the Tonna race with its full festive atmosphere, music, and color. Be prepared for the challenging terrain of this clifftop village, as the steep paths that once required donkeys still define access to this remote and picturesque location.
