About Shrine of Mary Most Holy of Abundance

Shrine of Mary Most Holy of Abundance - Marzano di Nola | Secret World Trip Planner

The shrine is of very ancient origin, in fact the date 1453 is carved on the stone portal. Probably at that time the building consisted of a small chapel and then grew larger over time. From that date onward for more than 100 years there is no news concerning that place of worship, but on December 7, 1604 Pope Clement VIII affiliates the congregation of Maria SS. dell'Abbondanza to the archconfraternity of the Holy Name of Mary at Traiana column in Rome. Concerning that act there are written confirmations by popes Innocent XI, in 1688, and Innocent XIII, in 1721. In 1773 the then bishop of Nola Filippo Lopez described it to the Vatican as, "a large, venerable and magnificent church" and of an image "greatly venerated by villagers and strangers," further confirming the existence of the congregation, which at that time consisted of more than 280 members. On July 29, 1788, the image of Our Lady was crowned in Nola at the seat of the diocese, which also donated laurel wreaths. On February 16, 1830, the shrine suffered a severe fire. Built on a spur of rock, there is a wide two-flight staircase on the outside by which the sanctuary can be accessed. The facade is simple; inside, the nave is enriched with stuccoes and canvases from all periods, and in the apse basin is a small temple from 1818 with a statue of Mary Most Holy of Abundance. Above is an artistic canvas depicting the Virgin Mary with angels and the brethren of the congregation. On the walls are the wooden stools of the congregation with precious canvases on them depicting episodes from the life of Mary. In the sacristy are preserved numerous important paintings and historic votive offerings. Also worth mentioning are the historic burial caves, now used as a museum.[2] From the terrace from which one enters the interior of the sanctuary it is possible to admire a splendid panorama. In fact, it is possible to clearly see Vesuvius and the Gulf of Naples with Capri and the Vesuvian towns.

Frequently Asked Questions

The shrine dates back to 1453, when its founding date was carved into the stone portal, making it a place of worship with over 570 years of history. It gained significant religious importance when Pope Clement VIII officially affiliated its congregation to the archconfraternity of the Holy Name of Mary in Rome in 1604, with subsequent papal confirmations from popes Innocent XI and Innocent XIII. By 1773, the bishop of Nola described it as 'a large, venerable and magnificent church' with an image greatly venerated by both villagers and visitors, boasting a congregation of more than 280 members.
Inside the sanctuary, visitors will find a nave enriched with stuccoes and canvases from various periods, along with a small temple built in 1818 featuring a statue of Mary Most Holy of Abundance in the apse basin. The shrine displays wooden congregation stools with precious canvases depicting episodes from Mary's life, and the sacristy preserves numerous important paintings and historic votive offerings. The shrine also features historic burial caves that now function as a museum for visitors to explore.
From the terrace where visitors enter the sanctuary, there is a splendid panorama overlooking the Bay of Naples region. On clear days, you can clearly see Mount Vesuvius, the Gulf of Naples, the island of Capri, and the surrounding Vesuvian towns, making it an excellent spot for both spiritual reflection and scenic photography. The shrine's location on a spur of rock provides particularly dramatic vistas of this iconic Neapolitan landscape.
The shrine is built on a spur of rock and is accessed via a wide two-flight staircase on the outside of the building leading up to the sanctuary entrance. The simple facade belies the richly decorated interior that awaits visitors at the top of the stairs. The elevated location on the rock formation naturally creates the impressive views of Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples.
On February 16, 1830, the shrine suffered a severe fire that caused significant damage to the building. Despite this setback, the shrine was restored and continued to serve as an important place of worship, with the small temple in the apse being constructed in 1818, possibly as part of restoration efforts. The shrine's resilience through this fire and its subsequent restoration speaks to its importance to the local community and the Catholic faithful.
